This portrait, formerly called 'the Dean of Durham', has tentatively been connected with the Mr. Mangles who appears to have sat to Reynolds on seven occasions in February 1755. Reynolds visited a Mr. Mangles near Plymouth on 6 and 20 September 1762, during his West Country tour.
