Lot Essay

Charles Barnett (1848-1937) was a director of the Alliance Insurance Co. from 1881. He was a partner in the banking house of Barnett, Hoares, Hanbury & Lloyds in 1878.

Sir Oswald Birley was born in Auckland, New Zealand and was educated at Harrow, Trinity College, Cambridge and studied art in Dresden, Florence, Paris and London, his work being much influenced by Velazquez whom he studied in Spain. Amongst his many sitters were Sir Winston Churchill and members of the Royal Family, including His Majesty King George V. Birley was knighted in 1949 and his work is represented in public collections including the National Portrait Gallery in London.
