Double portrait of a gentleman and a lady, possibly members of the Temple family of Stowe, half-length, seated in a garden, he in a dark brown suit and cloak, she in a brown dress with blue shawl, holding a scallop

This picture has been in the collection of the Duke of Buckingham and Chandos at Stowe House and was previously thought to show the Earl and Countess Temple of Stowe (Witt Library photograph), however, it was not until 1750 that Hester Temple of Stowe, Viscountess Cobham and Baroness Cobham, was created Countess of Stowe. It is possible that the portrait is of an earlier family member and his wife, for example, Sir Peter Temple (1613-c1660), son and heir of Sir Thomas Temple of Stowe and Hester, daughter of Miles Sandys of Latimer, Buckinghamshire, and Sir Peter's wife, Eleanor, daughter of Sir Timothy Tyrell of Okebury. Sir Thomas Temple and his wife, Hester, had thirteen children and Lady Temple was said to have lived to have seen seven hundred of her own descendents, therefore the portrait may show one of those and their spouses.

This picture is dated to the mid-1650s and is a fine example of Lely's pre-restoration style.
