Lot Essay

Although the identification of the sitter of this sensitive drawing has so far eluded us, it was drawn in 1814, when Lawrence was at the height of his fame. During this year he executed a chalk drawing of King George IV (K. Garlick, 'A catalogue of the paintings, drawings and pastels of Sir Thomas Lawrence', Walpole Society, XXXIX, London, 1963, p. 227) and the Duke of Wellington.
