Lot Essay

The dedication on the painting is believed to be to the artist's in-laws Sir Lionel Phillips (1855-1936) and his wife Florence (1863-1940). Nicholson had painted their portraits in 1924 and 1912 respectively. The location depicted in the painting is probably the River Wylie, near the home of the artist and his second wife Edie at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire.
