Lot Essay

The picture is sold with a note regarding its provenance, which reads: 'This painting, along with oddments of artist's materials from the studio of W. Russell Flint, was given to me, a young art student of pre-war days, by Thornton Shiells, who was a friend of my family. Thornton Shiells was the great friend of W. Russell Flint, who came from Scotland with him when they started their careers as artists in London. Mary N. Woolcock'.
