Of variant forms and ground colors, each painted with a portrait of a beauty, most identified on the underside, including: Odalisque, Herbst, Ruth, Una Gitana, Ellenborough, Abendklänge, Gioventu, Reflexion, Neapoletanerin, Frühling, Marie Antoinette, Poesie, Epheu and three of Erblüth; Ruth with a cover; three embellished with turquoise 'jewels'

Lot Essay

Several theories exist about the origins this type of diminutive vase. They could possibly have been made for dollhouses or for traveling salesmen-- their small scale would have made carrying them in a fitted box quite manageable.
