Lot Essay

Captain J.S. Willett was the only Officer of the 1st Dragoon Guards to receive a no-clasp Medal, having embarked for South Africa in June 1879 and been based at Utrecht on his arrival. He was placed on the Reserve of Officers soon after gaining advancement to Captain in June 1887.
