ADVANCE PROOF COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION WITH NUMEROUS CORRECTIONS, REVISIONS AND NOTES IN INK BY SPENDER and with numerous pencilled corrections and marginal notes possibly by Isaiah Berlin (philosopher and friend of Spender's). Laid in is an autograph note from the bookseller Bertram Rota: "The notes and revisions in ink are by Stephen Spender. The marginal notes in pencil might possibly be by I[saiah] Berlin, who is thanked in the prefatory note 'for helping with the proofs.' B.R."
