STANLEY'S PARALLEL-RULER
An ebonised wooden parallel-ruler, with brass crosspieces, and standing studs, 155 x 35mm. (unopened), with label inscribed 'H.M. Stanley, Livingstone Expedition 1870-1872', and paper inventory number 49.
A rare surviving mathematical instrument, useful for plotting on existing maps or drawing up maps of newly explored areas. Stanley was not known to have been a great mapper of territory so it is interesting that this instrument survived and was later labelled for exhibition.
