Lot Essay

The poetic, evocative title of Steve Roden’s if dunes dream and reds sleep in pairs… belies that the artist is a practicing musician, who has produced work for the Los Angeles Library, amongst other patrons. This clearly influences the lyrical vectors of colours that trace their way in opposing lines of force across the picture plane. It likely also inflects the juxtapositions and layering that, like free-from jazz stylings, weave from one way of rendering a passage to another, amounting to an aggregative palimpsest of buzzing colour and line.
