The composition derives from Baburen's picture in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg (see B. Nicolson, Carvaggism in Europe, ed. L. Vertova, Turin, 1990, III, no. 1071).
In a letter from Joseph Leiss (founder and director of the Tapeten Museum, Kassel) to the former owner in 1974, he refers to a statement by Proffessor Herzog (then ex-director of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Kassel) attributing the paintings to Dirk van Barburen.
