Lot Essay
The artist was the most succesful Antwerp painter in the first half of the 16th Century. The Adoration of the Magi was one of the most popular subjects, as it provided an opportunity to focus on the patterns on the rich garments of the Kings. As pointed out by G. Marlier, La Renaissance Flamande, Pierre Coeck D'Alost, 1966, p. 120, for the composition of these triptychs, Pieter Coecke van Aelst relied on his father-in-law Jan van Doornik. The composition of the present lot follows that by Van Doornik listed in a Parisian collection by Marlier (op.cit., p.127, fig.51).
