Lot Essay

"A much lager library of the same general character had been formed by Sir Mark Masterman Sykes (1771-1823), M.P., of Sledmere, Yorkshire; when sold by Evans it brought hardly more than the Watson Taylor collection. It contained a wonderful array of the finest incunabula, the Gutenberg Bible, the 1459 Psalter, the 1462 Bible, the 1469 Livy on vellum and other books of the same class. Sykes had also collected Elizabethan literature and secured some of the choicest items from the Bibliotheca Anglo-Poetica," De Ricci, pp. 95-96.
