Lot Essay

TAYEBA BEGUM LIPI WAS ONE OF THE FIVE ARTISTS CHOSEN TO REPRESENT BANGLADESH IN THE COUNTRY'S FIRST PAVILION AT THE VENICE BIENNALE IN 2011. THE INSTALLATION WORK BIZARRE AND BEAUTIFUL II, ANOTHER VERSION OF THE WORK PRESENTED IN VENICE, COMPRISES OF SCULPTED BRASSIERES MADE OF RAZOR BLADES MANUFACTURED IN A SMALL WORKSHOP IN OLD DHAKA HUNG ON TOWEL BARS WELDED IN SOBUJBAGH. THE BRASSIERES FROM A DISTANCE LOOK BEAUTIFUL AND SENSUAL, GLEAMING LIKE SMOOTH STAINLESS STEEL AGAINST THE LIGHT. ON CLOSER INSPECTION, THE VIEWER REALISES, BIZARRELY ENOUGH, THAT THE BRASSIERES ARE MADE OF BLADES AND SUDDENLY THE INSTALLATION TAKES ON A POTENTIALLY THREATENING AURA. THE FACT THAT THE BLADES ARE NOT SHARPENED, ADDS A THIRD DIMENSIONALITY BETWEEN REALITY, AWARENESS AND PERCEPTION.

THROUGH HER WORK, LIPI EXPLORES THE FEMINIST ISSUES OF MARGINALITY AND REPRESENTATION OF THE FEMALE BODY. SHE STRIVES TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE NOTION OF BEAUTY IS LARGELY DETERMINED BY HETEROSEXUAL MALE SENSIBILITIES. BIZARRE AND BEAUTIFUL II BEGS US TO QUESTION, "HOW DO WE REPRESENT BEAUTY IN A WOMAN? IS IT A COMBINATION OF A BEAUTIFUL MIND/BODY OR IS IT DETERMINED BY THE BODY ALONE? HOW DOES A FEMALE FIND HERSELF DIFFERENT FROM A MALE COUNTERPART? IS IT ESSENTIALLY DUE TO THE CONSTRUCT OF THE BODY?
(PARABLES: PAVILION OF BANGLADESH BIENNALE ARTE 2011, BENGAL FOUNDATION, DHAKA, 2011, P.119)

LIPI IS A RISING STAR FROM BANGLADESH. SHE REPRESENTS THE POTENTIAL TALENT AND STRENGTH BANGLADESH POSES TO THE INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY ART WORLD. SINCE GRADUATING FROM THE INSTITUTE OF FINE ART, UNIVERSITY OF DHAKA, SHE HAS HELD SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL RESIDENCIES INCLUDING, PARTAGE, MAURITIUS (2010); RM STUDIO, LAHORE (2008); GASWORKS, LONDON (2005); NATIONAL WORKSHOPS FOR ARTS AND CRAFTS, COPENHAGEN (2004); THE IRISH MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (2000); GALLERY 68-ELF, COLOGNE (2000) AND THE ARTS COUNCIL OF CENTRAL FINLAND, JYVASKYLA (2000). HER WORKS HAVE BEEN EXHIBITED IN NEW YORK, ONTARIO, LONDON, COPENHAGEN, JYVASKYLA AND NAGOYA, AMONG OTHER CITIES.
