Arnold Bamert made his first acquisition in African art in 1972 when he bought a Lega ivory figure (lot 142) from Paolo Morigi. He traveled only once to Africa himself and made the majority of his purchases from European galleries, most notably Künzi in Switzerland. He published a large catalogue of his collection in 1980, Afrika Stammeskunst in Urwald und Savanne, which gave him the opportunity not only to write about the objects he was so passionate about but also, as he was a keen photographer, to photograph them himself for the publication. An interview between Jean David and Arnold Bamert, who was aged 100 at the time, was published in the January 2005 issue of A4 magazine.
