Lot Essay

The example illustrated in the Molinari catalogue shows additional decoration on the archictural elements, and is described as a 'reworked aftercast'. The present example does not have these later embellishments, and has much more of the original detail in the modelling of the figures, the drapery, etc. The silvering and the metal piece fixed to the back indicate that it was attached as a decorative element to a larger piece, in the same way as the example in the Louvre, which forms the bottom of a silver vessel.
The design is taken from a drawing by Hans Rottenhammer in the Uffizi, Florence. A lead plaquette of Noah and his family, also by Bayer from a design by Rottenhammer, was sold in Spink auction 141, 22 March 2000, lot 436.
