A presentation copy of the authors edition, inscribed on the title page and dated July 12, 1888. A comprehensive record of the collection of George Catlin (1796-1872) in the U.S. National Museum. Catlin had been practicing law when he decided to pivot his interests and started to document the lives of Native Americans located in the Plains. The exhibit consists of more than 400 archival objects and paintings, an almost complete set of Catlin’s first “Indian Gallery”.

Thick octavo (227 x 140mm). 144 numbered plates including folding maps (closed tears to inner edge of maps). Original black cloth (rebacked with spine laid down). Provenance: Jos. E. ? [authorial inscription].
