Lot Essay

This gouache is clearly related to Dunand's monumental 18-panel incised gold lacquer mural which he created especially for the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques Appliqués à la Vie Moderne in Paris in 1937. Scaled down versions were also produced after 1937.
cf. Félix Marcilhac, Jean Dunand: His Life and Works, 1991, p. 149, Dunand in his atelier working on the design for the "Harvest" mural, circa 1936. See also p. 330, nos. 1229 - 1231, variant lacquer panels on the same theme illustrated, and no. 1232, a tapestry cartoon for "Ploughing" also in gouache.
