THE LOMAMI RIVER AND THE ARUWIMI FOREST

Seven African knives and five fighting axes, five labelled and four with exhibition or inventory numbers attached, comprising: two copper bladed knives, three knives, one with attached label inscribed 'Knives of the Lomami river natives', one numbered '115'; one axe with perforated crescent blade numbered '127' on a label on the wooden hilt and inscribed in ink 'No 1' on the hilt, an attached label 'No 10' and indistinctly inscribed on a label on the blade 'Knife used only by a /chief/from. or buttu../.ent by H.M. Stanley'; one small axe numbered '145' and titled 'LITTLE FIGHTING AXE/used by the Pygmies/of the Aruwhimi Forest' on the Victoria Gallery 1890 exhibition label attached to the handle; An axe numbered '141' on the hilt, the handle bound with wire and studded with nails, inscribed 'Chief Battle Axe/(very ancient)/lent by/H.M.Stanley' on a label on the blade; two axes, one inscribed 'two Bartusa/Axes/Malela Country/upper Lomami River' on a label attached to the handle, one numbered '138' on the top of handle, up to 16in. (40.6cm.) high; together with a large coloured photograph of the Congo Officers in Council, c.1879 with many of the axes in the background, framed (13)
Exhibited
An important group of Congolese knives and fighting axes displayed in Stanley's Sackville Street flat and used for the main dome display of the 1890 Exhibition. The enclosed photograph of the "Congo Conference in Mr Stanley's Library in London" was displayed on the left staircase to the gallery. Some of these weapons were collected on the Trans-Africa Expedition, and were already displayed in his flat by 1879 (see visible in the 'Officers of The Congo Council' photograph). The small axes which joined the display in the Victoria Gallery, 1890 are from the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.
