The penitent Saint Justus kneeling before an altar - a predella panel

This predella panel is a lateral element of the altarpiece painted for the church of SS. Giusto e Clemente at Faltugnano, and now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, Prato. The altarpiece is attributed to The Master of the Castello Nativity, the name given by Berenson to the unidentified Florentine painter, clearly influenced by Fra Filippo Lippi, who executed the Madonna adoring the Christ Child in the Accademia, Florence. The central predella panel depicting The Nativity (21.9 x 65.8 cm.) is now in the National Gallery, London. This was originally flanked by two panels (21.4 x 46.3 cm.) showing Saints Justus and Clement praying for Deliverance from the Barbarians on the left, and Saints Justus and Clement Multiplying the Grain of Volterra on the right, both of which are now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (The John G. Johnson Collection).
