A collection of artwork by Ivor Beddoes for The Red Shoes, including: twenty-eight egg tempera, watercolour and pencil costume designs, some annotated with character details, including Dr Coppelius, Coppelia Negro Girl and Heart of Fire Male Corps de Ballet, majority for unidentified characters, some signed in pencil Ivor and dated 1947; and eight similar set designs, largest -- 15x17½in. (38.1x44.5cm.), in three custom-made portfolios and loose, each folio with painted design on front cover and titled Red Shoes; and a cardboard sign with chocolate and turquoise painted lettering Dancing Class keep out -- 15x19½in. (38.1x49.5cm.)

Lot Essay

The Red Shoes, 1948, GFD, written and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, starred Anton Walbrook and Moira Shearer. The film received Academy Awards for best musical score by Brian Easdale and best art direction by Hein Heckroth and Arthur Lawson and was nominated for best picture, original story and editing. This film is widely acclaimed as the quintessential ballet film.
