William John Philpin Jones, whose cartoons appeared under the pseudonym JON,was born in 1913. The son of a bookmaker, he joined the Welsh Regiment in World War II and was attached to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry. He acted as Assistant Military Landing Officer in the beachheads at Salerno and Anzio in 1943. Although his Two Types cartoons (of which he eventually produced some 300) often appear to show scenes in the Western Desert, the first one was not produced until July 1944, by which time the Italian campaign was well advanced. These cartoons were an instant success and rank with Bairnsfather's "Old Bill" and Lowe's "Colonel Blimp" as masterpieces of contemporary military caricature. Their contribution to Allied morale was such that their author was awarded the MBE by Winston Churchill. William Jones continued to work as a most prolific humorous artist for many pubications after the War, eventually producing over 15,000 assorted cartoons. He died in 1992.
