Lot Essay

Several services with pois bleu decoration were made in the 1790's including one for the banker Francesco Maria Ignacio Piccaluga, delivered August 1790 with supplemental plates and covered cups along with a replacement saucer in January of the following year; another delivered to the merchant Verdier in June 1791, and a third to madame Lefebure in May 1792. Decoration of this type would seem to correspond to that of Albumn Designs 110, 128 and 131, variations occuring in the gilding pattern on the blue bands and in the flower decoration.

See Christie's Paris, 5/6 December 2001, lot 303 for another plate from the same service as the present set of thirteen, previously in the collection of Charles-Otto Zieseniss; also David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, privately printed, Little Berkhamsted, UK, 2005, no. 16.8.70, 27.6.91, and 16.5.1792.
