Lot Essay

The present drawing can be compared with de Keijser's Study for a civic guard portrait in the Albertina, Vienna. The clear, firm outlines, stocky figures and the brisk flicks of pen to delineate facial features are all extremely comparable, suggesting that the present drawing should be regarded as a fully autograph work. The Albertina drawing has been dated to 1630, which gives a likely general date for the present work.
