the first inscribed 'AEtat Suae 72: Ob:t 23 Feb 1736. AEtat 80' (lower left) and inscribed 'Hen: Crispe.A.M. Rector of Catton Yorkshire. Son of Hen: Crispe Esq:r of Dover. born there 10:th Octob:r 1657. & dyed at Catton 23 Feb: 1736/7 AEtat: 79.' (on reverse of canvas); and the second with inscription 'Aetat suee 70 Ann Crispe Wife of Henr.y Crispe.AM. daughter of Francis Percy of Cambridge. born June 6.th 1671 Fry Pinxit' (on the relining canvas presumably recording an earlier inscription and signature on the reverse of the original canvas)
