According to Dr. Anne G. Terhune, the seated figure in the present work relates to models used by Hovenden in other well known paintings. The seated man relates to the model used in An Old Shaver (1886), Taking His Ease (1885, Fine Arts Museum, San Francisco, California), Contentment (The Columbus Museum, Columbus, Georgia) and Their Pride (1888, Union League Club, New York).
