Lot Essay

The sitter was the son of Sir John Barker, 6th Bt. (d. 1757), by his wife Anne, daughter of Sir Compton Fytch, 2nd Bt., of Markshall, Kent, by his daughter, Anne, daughter of Sir Lumley Robinson, 2nd Bt.: they were married in 1740. In 1759 Lady Barker was remarried to Philip Broke of Nacton, Kent, whose first wife Anne Bowes had been the heiress of Sir William Fytch, 3rd (and last) Bt. of Markshall.
