Lot Essay

In scale and composition, the present watercolour is a very fine example of Richardson's oeuvre. Clearly influenced by the works of romantic landscape watercolourists such as J.M.W. Turner and Copley Fielding, Richardson has depicted the colourful and varied landscape of Italy on an epic sale. The artist made extensive tours of England, Scotland, and the Continent, but Italian subjects remained amongst his favourite.
