Lot Essay

John Clark Powell was appointed a Director of the London Assurance Corporation in 1795, and was Govenor between 1822 and 1846.

As a student at the Royal Academy, Phillips was a contemporary of Joseph Mallord William Turner. Early on in his career he concentrated on history painting, but he later came to focus on portraiture and it was as a portrait painter that he gained recognition, depicting influential patrons including the Prince of Wales.
