Oxford Castle was first built by Robert d'Oilly soon after the Norman Conquest in about 1071. Early in the 17th century it was sold by James I, the curtain walls were destroyed, but the moat remained and was used for boating and fishing. The present drawing seems to show the tower known as 'St. George's Tower', (which still stands today), with what might well be the castle mill to the right of the picture.
