Lot Essay

The present picture bears many similarities to other works of the same year. It has been suggested that this was possibly a commission resulting from Cooper's Royal Academy exhibit of 1857 (no. 513): 'When in Crimson Cloud of Even, the Lingering Light Decays'. It incorporates many of the same animals in a comparable landscape setting.

We are grateful to Kenneth Westwood for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
