THREE OVERLAY GLASS SNUFF BOTTLES
YANGZHOU SCHOOL, 1840-1900
Each is of rounded rectangular shape with elongated mask-and-ring handles on the narrow sides. The first bottle, 1860-1900, is carved through the translucent four-color overlay to the milky-white ground with a man holding a branch of peaches below a bat, and with a seal reading shou tong jin shi, expressing the wish for longevity. The reverse is decorated with ducks swimming amongst blossoming lotus, with birds and insects above, and with a seal reading Jixiang. The second, 1840-1890, is carved through the thin white overlay to the transparent red ground with a hunt scene and a horse and rider, with a small oval seal reading Jixiang ('auspicious') at one side. The third bottle, 1840-1890, is carved through the transparent amber-colored overlay to the milky-white bottle with a fisherman holding two fish, and the reverse with plants and birds, and with a seal reading yan bo ke ('a visitor to the misty waters').
