3 volumes, 8° (212 x 145mm). With final blanks. (Margins with light scattered spotting and occasional light soiling, occasional light staining, faint dampstain in the bottom margin of volume 2.) Near contemporary Russian leather backed marbled boards, spines lettered directly in gilt, compartments ruled in gilt and blind (corners rubbed). Provenance: pencilled signature on front endpapers.
FIRST EDITION. An attractive, well-margined copy in an early Russian binding. Dostoevsky declared this fine novel 'a flawless work of art', while Thomas Mann called it 'unequalled'. Anna Karenina was serialized in Ruskii Vestnik from 1873 to 1878, but a clash between its editor Mikhail Katkov and Tolstoi prevented publication of the final instalment. This first edition marks the first appearance of the complete text. Kilgour 1196.
