The first necklace comprising 108 carnelian agate beads, 3 large jadeite beads, a double gourd-form jadeite bead and mounted rectangular pendant, suspending three metal filigree-mounted teardrop pendants of carnelian, jadeite and amethyst; the second of the same arrangement and number of beads but composed entirely of yellow glass; fitted circular brocade box (2)

Lot Essay

The court necklace, chaozhu, was an integral element of Qing official dress. Linked to the Buddhist rosary, the necklace was composed of 108 beads in four sections of 27, separated by larger 'Buddha's head' beads. Many different materials were used including Eastern pearls, which were for the Emperor's use exclusively. Compare an amber court necklace sold in these rooms 26 March, 2003, lot 77.
