In Greek mythology, the daughter of Inachus, first king of Argos tells how she was seduced by Jupiter, who first changed himself into a cloud to conceal his infidelity from his wife, Juno. But she was not deceived so Jupiter then changed Io into a white heifer. Juno cunningly asked for it as a gift, which her husband could not refuse. Juno handed the heifer over to the hundred-eyed giant Argus to guard. Jupiter there upon sent his messenger Mercury to recover it. Mercury charmed the watchful Argus to sleep with his lyre, and then cut off his head. Juno took Argus' hundred eyes and as a memento, set them in the tail of the peacock, where they are seen to this day. She sent a gadfly to torment Io which chased her across the world.
For his third labor Hercules was ordered by Eurystheus to bring him the Hind of Ceryneia, Diana's pet deer. After hunting the deer for one year he shot her and on his way to Mycenae was met by Diana, who was very angry. But after explaining that Hercules was ordered by the oracle to kill the deer Diana let go of her anger and healed the deer.
