Scrapbook belonging to Lieut. Col. James Grant, 1860s and later

Scrapbook containing fifty-one albumen prints including thirty-one in stereo format, other sizes approx. 4 x 3½ in. to 6½ x 9½ in., occasional titles and numbers in the negatives, variously mounted, several titled/captioned and/or dated in ink, original passport of father James Grant dated 31 mai 1824, miscellaneous printed postcards and loose watercolours, half morocco, titled in ink Scrapbook. Pictures of people and places at Home & Abroad. African and other Photographs on paper label on front cover, 4to.
Provenance
This album formed part of the collection of Grant's papers which was sold at Sotheby's London, 13th March 1979. The papers are now in the collection of the National Library of Scotland.

Lot Essay

Including stereoscopic views of the slave market in Zanzibar; portraits of servants, Baron von der Deeken, and a group portrait of 'Sir Robert Napier and his staff - Camp Abyssinia'.

Col. Grant accompanied John Hanning Speke on his expedition across Africa in the early 1860s, commissioned by the Royal Geographical Society and in 1868 he served in the intelligence department with the Abyssinian expedition under Lord Napier.
