Lot Essay

Vasilii Petrovich Shchegolenok (1805-1886) was a famous Russian skazitel', or teller of folk-tales. An acquaintance of Leo Tolstoy, Shchegolenok's portrait was also painted by Ilya Repin. A preparatory sketch for the present lot is currently held in the Abramstevo Museum.
