Lot Essay

After his retirement from the military, the distinguished general von Schulenburg settled in Venice, where he formed an art collection and became a patron of Giambattista Piazzetta, Giovanni Antonio Guardi and Giambattista Pittoni, among others. For other portraits of the sitter, see A. Binion, La Galleria scomparsa del maresciallo von der Schulenburg: Un mecenate nella Venezia del Settecento, Milan, 1990, figs. 1-14.
