Dating from his later years, after Verdi had established his reputation at La Scala with such masterpieces as Rigoletto (1851), Il Trovatore (1853) and La Traviata (1853). The masterpieces of his old age, Otello (1887) and Falstaff (1893) marked the culmination of Italian grand opera. In the 1860s his music was linked to the Monarchist cause (V[ictor] E[mmanuel] R[e] D'I[talia]) during the Risorgimento, when Garibaldi and the Red Shirts seized Sicily and Naples and Victor Emmanuel was proclaimed king of a united Italy.
