VESALIUS, Andreas (1514-1564). De humani corporis fabrica libri septem. Basel: Johannes Oporinus, August 1555.
2o (415 x 272 mm). Woodcut pictorial title, author portrait on a6v, 2 folding woodcut diagrams, and numerous woodcut illustrations, some full-page. (Early ink deletion on title causing a narrow hole on blank portion of title shield, title margins soiled with small stamp removed, publisher's name partially removed from title-page and on colophon, lacking final leaf Ee6, blank except for publisher's device on verso, each folding sheet with horizontal tear crossing image repaired, marginal dampstaining, heaviest at beginning and end, occasional browning and pale spotting.) Modern half vellum, edges gilt.
Third edition, SECOND FOLIO EDITION. The second folio edition of De humani corporis fabrica was also printed, as the first, by Johannes Oporinus in Basel. The text, incorporating Vesalius' final revisions, was set in larger type, with 49 instead of 50 lines per page, and was printed on larger and heavier paper. The initials were recut to fit the new type size, and the frontispiece was also recut with several differences of detail. The anatomical illustrations, however, and the portrait of Vesalius were reprinted from the 1543 woodblocks. Adams V-605; Choulant-Frank, pp. 181-82; Cushing VI.A.-3; Garrison-Morton 377; NLM/Durling 4579; Norman 2139; Osler 568; Waller 9901; Wellcome 6562.
