A student of the École Royale gratuite de dessin, Victor-Jean Nicolle stayed twice in Italy, in 1787-1798 and 1806-1811. His œuvre comprises many views of Italy, and especially of Rome. In addition to this and the following two lots, a characteritsic example, representing San Stefano Rotondo in Laterano, was in the sale Christie’s, Paris, 1 April 2011, lot 98

Formé à l’École royale gratuite de dessin, Victor-Jean Nicolle a séjourné à deux reprises en Italie, de 1787 à 1798 et de 1806 à 1811. Les nombreuses vues italiennes, et plus particulièrement de Rome, caractérisent son oeuvre graphique prolifique. Un exemple
significatif représentant L’Église Saint-Étienne de Rome est passé en vente chez Christie’s à Paris le 1er avril 2011, lot 98.
