Lot Essay

The two most characteristic qualities of Vasnetsov were keen observation and a close interest in the life of people.
In 1876, acting on the advice of friends, Vasnetsov went abroad and settled on the outskirts of Paris, where he did a lot of work from nature. His album from this period is full of drawings depicting working-class people and peasants and the principle result of his observations was the painting Showboats on the outskirts of Paris, painted in 1877 and now in The State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the first version of which is in the Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow. The present sitter can be seen in the lower left of the composition of this larger work.
