The Italian painter and art critic Francesco Netti admired the work of Migliaro and remarked that his work seemed to combine two opposing stylistic tendencies; an exact and immediate approach to light and atmosphere, combined with a certain lack of precision.
Migliaro has combined these two elements in the present work, suffusing the picture in a warm light whilst allowing the painterly brushwork to suggest his sitter's hair, dress and décolletage. Painted around the turn of the century the bold, frontal composition of the present work bears similarities to studio photography which was beginning to establish itself as a popular medium. Migliaro had a successful career and during the last years of his life served as Head of Painting at the Neapolitan Accademia.
