Original half calf with brown cloth, the upper cover lettered in Russian in gilt 'To His Imperial Highness Grand Duke Vladimir Aleksandrovich, the august President of the Imperial Academy of Arts dedicated with reverent and infinite thanks by Fedor Iordan', (slightly faded and rubbed, flaps and ties replaced).

Fedor Ivanovich Iordan (1800-83), an eminent engraver, was appointed leader of the class of engraving at the Academy of Arts in 1854, then keeper of the collection of prints at the Hermitage in 1860, and in 1871 rector of painting and sculpture at the Academy, all the while continuing his profession as engraver. Grand Duke Vladimir, second son of Alexander II was appointed president of the Academy of Arts in 1875.
