Langley first visited Holland in the Summer of 1904 with fellow Newlyn artist, R. Harry Carter. They made their headquarters at Volendam, a fishing village on the Zuider Zee, staying at the Hotel Spaander. Langley was so captivated by the Dutch scene and the company of other artists in this flourishing colony that he resolved to return in 1905, staying as before at the Hotel Spaander.

On his return he exhibited three Volendam works, including the present watercolour at the Newlyn Art Gallery: An Old Dutchman, A Fisherman of the Zuider Zee, and An Old Inhabitant. The Cornish Telegraph critic commented, 'The works from the brush of Mr Walter Langley, R.I., are in his very best style and are eloquent tributes to the power he holds in reproducing scenes from everyday life ... three small pictures of typical Dutch folk, which are very fine examples of this artist's ability and quite photographic in lifelike expression' (see R. Langley, op. cit, p. 132).
