Lot Essay

Dr. Arthur Stanbury Cobbledick, M.D., was an opthalmologist who treated Sickert for an eye ailment, and attended classes at Sickert's Highbury Place school. The present work is a second version of a portrait exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1930, no.256, which was painted in lieu of medical fees.
(see R. Shone, Victoria Art Gallery Exhibition Catalogue, Bath, 1990, p.38).
