Lot Essay

In the autumn of 1903 Sickert travelled to Venice where he took rooms at 940 Calle dei Frati until the summer of 1904. The sharp-featured Guiseppina was a favourite model. Her work as a prostitute allowed her time to sit for Sickert each day between 9 and 11 in the morning and between 1 and 4 in the afternoon.
