Born in 1923, Widayat was among the first batch of students at the Indonesian Academy of Fine Arts (ASRI), Yogjakarta. Upon graduating from the academy in 1954, he worked as a teacher in the academy. A pioneer in the art of a uniquely Indonesian decorative art, his work is often described as being enchanting and magical. Rhythmically repeating motifs derived mythology or religious literature the rendering them in a style similar to primitive and tradition art, his works are rich in texture, vibrant in colour, and full of deep symbolism. Adam and Eve in Paradise (Lot 2155) is exemplary of the Widayat style of painting. A lyrical scene occupied by flora and fauna, the scene he depicts is no doubt a paradise. By painting the figures of Adam and Eve as mere humans amidst a vast landscape, he enhances the sense of the scene being a dream-like promise land laid out to the couple. Using warm and vibrant colours, this meticulously painted work presents a celebration of life as one with nature.
