Lot Essay

The present work can be added to a group of paintings by Herp illustrating scenes from the Old and New Testaments. Stylistically these paintings seem to have been executed during the same period, however, none are dated and it remains difficult to secure their position within his oeuvre. These include The Annunciation, sold at Christie's, New York, 29 January 1998, lot 55 ($35,000), and Moses trampling on Pharoah's Crown, Christie's, London, 8 December 1989, lot 38.
